Donta Gimel ("Mooney") Burney

Donta Gimel Burney was affectionately known to his family and friends as "Mooney." He was born on February 10, 1982, in Pitt County to William Reese and Alice Reese Gibbs.  He departed his life on October 25, 2023.  He was preceded in death by his father William Earl Reese; maternal grandmother, Norma Faye Roberson; maternal great-grandmother, Lizzie Bell Burney Carter;paternal grandfather, Oscar Maye; aunts, Juanita and Valerie Moore.  Donta attended Pitt County Schools and worked several jobs over the years within the Greenville and Lewiston areas.  He leaves to cherish his memory; his mother, Alice Gibbs (James) of Greenville, North Carolina; two sisters, Yonkella Burney and Kristian Hardy both of Greenville, North Carolina; one daughter, Shadiahia Burney of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; four sons, Jalyric Cherry Burney of Greenville, North Carolina, Jamaica Cherry Burney of Greenville, NC;  Zyaiirh Burney of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Chance Burney of Williamston, North Carolina; step-sister, Leslie Boyd of Winterville, North Carolina; step-brother, James Boyd of Greenville, North Carolina; nine aunts, Delois Burney (Billy) of Greenville, North Carolina, Alice and Ann Reese, both of Greenville, North Carolina, Sudie Grzegorski (Walter) of Simpson, North Carolina, Mary Little (Elmond) of Simpson, North Carolina, Connie Battle (Willie) of Simpson, North Carolina, Calesha Sneed of Greenville, North Carolina, Marilyn Russell of Grimesland, North Carolina, and Cathy Sharpe (Lonnie) of Greenville, North Carolina; five uncles, Calvin Burney of Greenville, North Carolina, Darnell Maye of Greenville, North Carolina, Jasper Burney (Ida) of Greenville, North Carolina, Michael and Hertford Moore both of Winterville, North Carolina; special cousins, Kesha, Dwayne, Jarmar, Danika, Nihesha, Willie, and Shenadoah; and a host of relatives and friends.
